As a producer, licensed supplier and seller of medical marijuana, Aphria must adhere to stringent Health Canada regulations. The governing body is responsible for the oversight of commercial medical marijuana growers under their Marijuana for Medical Purposes Regulations (the “MMPR”). One of the key requirements from Health Canada is to ensure growers have a high security program in place for their facilities.
The company has three state-of-the-art light and computer-controlled greenhouses in a 450,000 square foot facility in Leamington, Ontario, plus 22,000 square feet of production space with plans to significantly increase capacity in the next 12 to 24 months. Their goal is to become the premier pharmaceutical company for medical marijuana in Canada.
With a massive facility and strict security requirements, Aphria needed a biometric solution that would ensure only a person’s true identity could be used for access – and to limit access to specific areas to key personnel. Enhanced security needs called for two-factor authentication, which requires users to use a fingerprint and a personal identification number (PIN).
“I would definitely recommend the BioConnect and Suprema solution to other businesses.” – John Cervini, Co-founder & CAO
Aphria turned to their trusted security provider, Security ONE Alarm Systems, for a solution. Security ONE recommended BioConnect Suprema based on their track record of providing industry leading biometric solutions. The solution was installed in March 2014 and all components and enrollment were fully deployed by July
The solution provides access control to sensitive areas with different security levels on everything from exterior and interior doors, raw goods and processing areas, and the greenhouse. Different security levels have been implemented depending on where a person is within the facility. These measures have helped the company strictly control access throughout every aspect of the facility – a key requirement.
Fourteen Suprema biometric readers, including the BioStation and Biolite Net, have been in full deployment at Aphria’s greenhouse facility for more than six months. The solution has allowed them to meet Health Canada security requirements, has improved ease of use and provided better access management oversight.
“The Suprema biometric readers installed by Security ONE are really easy and quick to use,” says John Cervini, Aphria cofounder and CAO. “The system and its functionality are strong and quite nice to work with. Having controlled access to all areas of our facility has improved daily management and helped address Health Canada regulations for security”
In the near future, the company plans to activate the timekeeping feature in the Suprema readers for time and attendance management to improve accuracy of attendance records and significantly decrease the manual tabulation of time worked.
